3-Day Childukhtaron Tour

Childukhtaron – the valley of the forty girls

3 Days / 2 Nights | Private Hiking & Cultural Adventure

Dushanbe → Nurek → Kulob → Childukhtaron → Dushanbe

Childukhtaron, meaning “Forty Girls,” is one of southern Tajikistan’s most fascinating mountain landscapes. The area is famous for its dramatic rock formations, green valleys, peaceful mountain scenery and ancient legends. This journey combines two beautiful hikes, cultural discoveries and comfortable nights in the mountains.

DAY 1 — DUSHANBE → NUREK → KULOB → CHILDUKHTARON 250 kilometers, taking about 4 to 5 hours of total driving time depending on road conditions and connections.
Our adventure begins in Dushanbe as we leave the capital and travel south towards the spectacular landscapes of Tajikistan.
The road takes us through changing scenery, from the urban environment of Dushanbe to wide valleys, dry mountain slopes and increasingly dramatic landscapes. Our first major stop is the Nurek Reservoir, one of the most impressive artificial lakes in Central Asia. From the viewpoints above the reservoir, we can admire the enormous blue lake surrounded by rugged mountains. There will be time for photography and enjoying the panorama. We continue towards Kulob, one of Tajikistan’s oldest cities and an important historical and cultural centre in the south of the country.

After lunch, we can visit the Mausoleum of Mir Said Ali Hamadoni, the resting place of the famous Persian-Tajik poet, philosopher and Sufi scholar. The site provides an excellent introduction to the spiritual and cultural heritage of southern Tajikistan.
From Kulob, the landscape gradually becomes more mountainous as we continue towards Muminabad and finally Childukhtaron.

Upon arrival, we settle into our hotel surrounded by mountains. After the journey, we enjoy a gentle walk around the nearby landscape, allowing us to stretch our legs and become familiar with the spectacular surroundings.
As evening approaches, the mountains become beautifully illuminated by the setting sun. Dinner will feature traditional Tajik cuisine and local hospitality.
Overnight: Childukhtaron Hotel.

DAY 2 — CHILDUKHTARON: THE FORTY GIRLS HIKING ADVENTURE
After breakfast, we begin our main hiking experience in the Childukhtaron mountains.
The trail takes us away from the hotel and deeper into the mountain landscape. We walk through open valleys, alpine meadows and rugged terrain, gradually approaching the famous rock formations that gave Childukhtaron its name. According to local legend, the unusual stone formations resemble a group of young women who were turned to stone. The legend has been passed from generation to generation and has become an important part of the identity of Childukhtaron.
As we approach the formations, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Tall rocky pinnacles rise above the surrounding valleys, creating a natural open-air sculpture garden.
The hike continues towards several viewpoints from where we can appreciate the scale of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This is an excellent opportunity for landscape photography and for simply enjoying the tranquillity of the area.
We stop in a scenic location for a mountain picnic, surrounded by the spectacular Childukhtaron landscape.
After lunch, we continue exploring the area on foot, following a different section of the mountain trail before gradually making our way back towards the hotel.
The afternoon is dedicated to relaxation. Guests can enjoy the peaceful surroundings, photograph the mountains or simply experience the atmosphere of this remote part of Tajikistan.
In the evening, we enjoy a traditional dinner and another night surrounded by the mountains.
Hiking: approximately 4–6 hours, moderate difficulty, depending on the final route and conditions.
Overnight: Childukhtaron Hotel.

DAY 3 — SUNRISE HIKE → → KHOVALING → DANGHARA → DUSHANBE 220 kilometers, taking about 4 to 5 hours of total driving time depending on road conditions and connections.

Our final morning begins with a short sunrise hike around Childukhtaron. We explore a different viewpoint and enjoy the morning light illuminating the spectacular rock formations and surrounding valleys.
After returning to the hotel, we have breakfast and prepare for the journey back to Dushanbe.
We leave Childukhtaron and travel towards Khovaling, passing through remote mountain landscapes, traditional villages and broad valleys. Khovaling is an excellent place to experience the quieter side of southern Tajikistan, far from the country’s main tourist routes.
Along the way, we make several scenic stops for photography and to appreciate the changing landscape. The route gradually descends from the mountain environment towards the wider valleys of southern Tajikistan.
We continue towards Danghara, an important agricultural and economic centre of the region. The landscape around Danghara is noticeably different, with wide cultivated plains framed by mountains.
We stop for lunch and have the opportunity to experience some local food before continuing north towards Dushanbe.
The final part of the journey takes us through beautiful mountain valleys and along the roads leading back towards the capital.
We arrive in Dushanbe in the evening, bringing our three-day Childukhtaron adventure to an end.

Return Route
Childukhtaron → Khovaling → Danghara → Dushanbe
This route makes the itinerary more attractive because the return journey follows a different road, allowing guests to discover more of southern Tajikistan rather than simply retracing the route from Day 1.
